The Mask of Anarchy
A pageant passes before a sleeper: Murder in a mask like Castlereagh, Fraud in an ermined gown whose tears turn to millstones, Hypocrisy riding a crocodile, and behind them Anarchy on a white horse with a crown and a sceptre, moving through England toward the Bank and the Tower. A maniac maid who gives her name as Hope lies down in the road in front of the horses. Shelley wrote it in Italy within days of the news of Peterloo and sent it to Leigh Hunt, who did not dare print it until 1832.
