England in 1819

Percy Bysshe Shelley · 1819 CE · Poem · English · Romantic

An old, mad, blind, despised and dying king heads a catalogue of princes who are the dregs of their dull race, a people stabbed in an untilled field, an army made into a two-edged sword, and laws that tempt and slay. The whole indictment is held in one sentence and keeps its main verb back until the closing lines. Sent to Leigh Hunt in the winter after Peterloo, it stayed unprinted until 1839.
