Canto General
Fifteen sections open on a continent before any name was put on it, its rivers and ores and vegetation, then work forward through Cortés and Pizarro, Bolívar and O'Higgins, the nitrate companies and the presidents who served them. One long section indicts a sitting Chilean government man by man. Composed largely in safe houses while a warrant was out for his arrest, smuggled abroad, and printed in Mexico while he was still in exile.
