Spain in Our Hearts

Pablo Neruda · 1937 CE · Poem · Latin American · Modernist

Asked why his poems no longer speak of dreams, of leaves, of the great volcanoes of his own country, the poet answers with the house he kept in Madrid, the flower market on the corner, and the blood of children running simply in the street. Friends are named and so are the men who killed them. Set in type at the Republican front by soldiers of the Eastern Army, on paper they made from captured flags and enemy uniforms.
