Ballad of the Army Carts

Du Fu · c. 750 CE · Poem · Chinese · Medieval

Carts groan, horses whinny, and conscripts go past with bows at the waist while parents and wives run alongside to the Xianyang bridge, raising dust that hides the clothes they clutch at. One falls out of the line to explain: bound at the head at fifteen for the northern garrisons, still on the frontier at forty, the fields behind him gone to bramble. Usually named as the start of Du Fu's poetry of remonstrance, written as the court pressed its southwestern campaigns.
