Autumn Meditations

Du Fu · c. 766 CE · Poem · Chinese · Medieval

Written in a river town below the Yangtze gorges, eight linked lyrics in which jade dew withers the maple forest, chrysanthemums open a second time on tears, and a moored boat holds its owner's heart to a garden he will not see again. Between mist on the frontier and washing blocks sounding at dusk, the sequence keeps returning to Chang'an - the palace towers, the pheasant-tail fans, the stone whale in the pleasure lake - as a capital already lost to rebellion. The most heavily annotated sequence in Chinese literature, and the work by which regulated verse is usually measured.
