Dreaming of Li Bai

Du Fu · c. 759 CE · Poem · Chinese · Medieval

Parting from the dead is done with once and for all, but parting from the living leaves a grief with no bottom, and no word has come out of the malarial south where a banished friend was sent. He arrives in a dream all the same, walking through green maple woods and out again past a black frontier pass, and the sleeper wakes to a setting moon on the roofbeams and cannot tell whether what visited him was a man or a soul. Two poems written from Qinzhou during Li Bai's exile toward Yelang.
