Farewell to a Friend

Li Bai · c. 750 CE · Poem · Chinese · Medieval

Green hills lie across the northern wall and white water curves round the east of the town, and at that spot the two part before the traveller goes ten thousand li as a single tuft of thistledown. A floating cloud is offered for the wanderer's state of mind and the setting sun for the feeling of the man who stays. Eight lines that fixed the conventions of the Chinese farewell lyric for the next thousand years.
