Sea Grapes

Derek Walcott · 1976 CE · Poem · Caribbean · Contemporary

A sail beating up the Caribbean could be a schooner working home to St Lucia or Odysseus still bound for Ithaca, and the opening poem refuses to choose, holding the ancient obsession and the local one in a single line. Later pages turn to a dying empire's language, to the naming of places, and to the flat honest speech of fishermen. The book where Walcott's classical parallel becomes a working method rather than an allusion.
