A Cold Spring
At a Nova Scotia inlet an old man nets herring beside a capstan, and the water is described first as it would feel to the hand and then to the tongue — dark, salt, clear, moving, utterly free. A traveller sets the engravings in a family Bible against the places she has actually reached, and a farmhand sleeping in the pigsty cannot yet make up his mind to go home. Eighteen poems, issued bound with her first book.
