Geography III

Elizabeth Bishop · 1976 CE · Poem · Modern / American · Contemporary

In a dentist's waiting room in Worcester in 1918 a girl not quite seven reads a National Geographic and feels herself falling off the round turning world. An aged Crusoe, back in England and bored, keeps a useless knife on a shelf; a night bus out of Nova Scotia stops for a moose standing in the road; a villanelle practises losing keys, houses, a continent. Ten poems, the last book she published.
