Repetition
In 1960 a Carinthian Slovene of twenty leaves his village at the end of school and crosses the Yugoslav border to look for the elder brother who went missing in the war, carrying nothing but the brother's orchard notebook and a Slovene-German dictionary. Reading the half-lost language word by word becomes the journey itself, each entry opening a country his family was pushed out of. Handke takes his title and epigraph from Kierkegaard's essay of 1843, and the book is the most sustained statement of his lifelong attachment to the Slovene half of his inheritance.
