Offending the Audience

Peter Handke · 1966 CE · Play · German · Contemporary

Four speakers walk onto a bare stage and address the people in the seats directly, listing at length everything that is not going to happen — no story, no characters, no scenery, no illusion of a world behind the lights. Having emptied the evening of everything but the room itself, they turn and insult the spectators in rhythmic, precisely timed abuse that is fully scripted. Handke was twenty-four when it premiered at Frankfurt's Experimenta, and it made his name overnight as the most aggressive of the German-language postwar avant-garde.
