Tonight We Improvise

Luigi Pirandello · 1930 CE · Play · Italian · Modernist

Doctor Hinkfuss steps in front of the curtain to explain that what follows has no script: he has taken a Pirandello story about a Sicilian family with four marriageable daughters and will direct his company through it live. The scenes go up in a cabaret, an aeroplane hangar and a church, and the actors, finding the parts working on them, begin refusing his instructions. Third of the theatre-in-the-theatre group, and the one that puts the director rather than the author in the dock.
