The Left-Handed Woman
Home from an evening celebrating her husband's promotion, a translator living in a housing estate below a wooded hill tells him she has had a sudden illumination: he is going to go away and leave her by herself. She keeps the flat and the small son, walks the estate, works slowly at a translation, and receives a father, a publisher and a friend who each try and fail to account for what she has done. Handke records the days at eye level and withholds every explanation, which is the whole of the exercise.
