The Yellow Wallpaper

Charlotte Perkins Gilman · 1892 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Victorian

A woman brought to a rented country house for a rest cure is forbidden to write or work, and keeps a secret journal anyway. Shut in an upstairs room, she begins to study the sprawling yellow wallpaper, and to see a figure moving behind its pattern. A rest cure becomes a haunting; the standard text on being diagnosed out of one's own mind.
