My Year in the No-Man's-Bay

Peter Handke · 1994 CE · Novel · German · Contemporary

A writer settled in a suburb south-west of Paris, on the edge of woods he calls the bay of no man, sets out to record a single year while seven friends scattered from Scotland to Japan travel toward him or away. Their journeys are narrated at second hand and at enormous length, braided with his walks, his abandoned marriages, and his suspicion that the metamorphosis he keeps waiting for has already happened without his noticing. It is the largest of Handke's late books and the fullest version of his argument that slowness is a form of attention.
