Robinson Crusoe
A young Englishman ignores his father's advice, goes to sea, and is thrown up alone on an island off the mouth of the Orinoco after a shipwreck. He salvages what he can from the wreck and spends decades manufacturing a life out of it - shelter, crops, goats, a calendar - until a footprint in the sand tells him he is not alone. Solitude, industry, and the shadow of empire.
