Colonel Jack

Daniel Defoe · 1722 CE · Novel · English · Enlightenment

A gentleman's bastard raised among the beggar boys who sleep in the warm ashes of a Rosemary Lane glasshouse learns to pick pockets long before he learns that money can be put anywhere safe, and is kidnapped aboard a Virginia ship at about the point where he might have stopped. Bought as a plantation servant, he rises to overseer and then to planter by working out that mercy governs men better than the whip does. Five marriages, a French war and a Jacobite scrape follow, the whole of it narrated as the ledger of a man establishing whether he counts as a gentleman.
