Oliver Twist

David Lean · 1948 CE · Film · English · Contemporary

A workhouse orphan who dares to ask for more gruel runs away to London and falls in with a pickpocket gang run by the fence Fagin and the brutal housebreaker Bill Sikes. Lean's expressionist staging — the storm-lit opening, Guinness's Fagin — drew protests over caricature and delayed its American release. With Great Expectations it fixed Dickens's look on screen for a generation.
