Brief Encounter

David Lean · 1945 CE · Film · English · Contemporary

A suburban wife and a married doctor meet by chance in a railway refreshment room, and their Thursday meetings deepen into a love neither can act on, narrated as her silent confession over Rachmaninov. Adapted from Noël Coward's one-act play Still Life, from the Tonight at 8:30 cycle, expanded from Coward's one-act Still Life. Its restraint made it the definitive screen study of English emotional repression.
