The tram halts because the city has been sealed for a checkpoint, and the stalled passengers begin to look at one another - a medical student inking a diagram of the human body, a clerk's family, a man holding hot steamed buns wrapped in newspaper. To dodge a nephew who is angling for an introduction to his boss, the accountant Lu Zongzhen changes seats and starts talking to Wu Cuiyuan, a young English instructor grading compositions in her lap, and inside the length of the stoppage an entire courtship runs its course. Published in occupied Shanghai in the year Eileen Chang became famous, and the piece that first brought her to the notice of Hu Lancheng.
