Lust, Caution

Eileen Chang · 1979 CE · Short Story · Chinese · Modernist

At a mahjong table in occupied Shanghai the wives of collaborationist officials compare diamonds and tailors, and among them sits a young woman introduced as Mrs Mak, who is not anybody's wife and has spent two years assembling this particular afternoon. The man she is meant to bring to a jeweller's shop on a side street runs the puppet government's secret police, and the plan requires that she has already become someone else. Chang worked on these twenty-eight pages, on and off, for more than twenty years.
