The Handmaiden

Park Chan-wook · 2016 CE · Film · Korean · Contemporary

A Korean pickpocket is placed as maid to a Japanese heiress on a remote estate in the 1930s, part of a confidence trick run by a false count who means to marry the woman and then have her committed. The house is half English and half Japanese, and the uncle who raised her keeps a library of books she is made to read aloud to gentlemen. Park transposes Sarah Waters's Fingersmith, which this archive does not hold, from Victorian England to Korea under Japanese rule.
