A workhouse orphan who dares to ask for more falls in with a den of boy pickpockets in Victorian London, charmed by the wheedling Fagin and shadowed by the brutal Bill Sikes. Reed's musical took the Best Picture Oscar of 1968; its direct source is Lionel Bart's 1960 stage musical, not held here, rather than Dickens's novel itself.
