The Commitments

Roddy Doyle · 1987 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

Jimmy Rabbitte, who knows what records his friends ought to be listening to, assembles a soul band out of unemployed north Dublin and informs it that the Irish are the blacks of Europe. Auditions in a bedroom, rehearsals in a garage, an elderly trumpeter who claims to have played with everyone, and a set of Detroit and Memphis covers carried into working-men's clubs and parish halls. Told almost entirely in dialogue, with the accent left in.
