A Bronx bouncer out of work when his club closes takes a driving job for a Black concert pianist touring the segregated South in 1962, using the motorist's guide that listed which places would serve him. Each is embarrassed by the other in a different register. Its Best Picture win was contested at the time by people who knew the pianist's family.
