Five Easy Pieces

Bob Rafelson · 1970 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

A California oil-rigger drinks, bowls and bullies his pregnant waitress girlfriend, and turns out to have been a concert pianist raised among musicians on an island in Puget Sound. News of his father's stroke sends him north with the girlfriend in tow, into a family whose manners she cannot read. Nicholson's diner scene over an order of toast became the decade's shorthand for refusing to be handled.
