A Bible salesman working the Depression Kansas dust reads obituaries in the local paper and delivers gilt-edged copies to widows whose husbands supposedly ordered them. Saddled with a nine-year-old girl from a funeral he attends, he finds she runs the con better than he does and keeps an account of what he owes her. Tatum O'Neal remains the youngest competitive Academy Award winner.
