The Pickwick Papers
A retired gentleman of independent means founds a club to travel England and report on whatever it turns up, taking three friends and, once he learns he needs one, a Cockney bootblack as his man. Coaching inns, a cricket match, a rogue who keeps reappearing under new names, a breach-of-promise suit brought by his own landlady and a spell in the Fleet debtors' prison follow. Issued in monthly parts, it made its twenty-four-year-old author famous overnight and settled the serial as the century's dominant form.
