The Old Curiosity Shop
A child keeps house for her grandfather among the antiquities of his London shop, not knowing that he gambles away everything they have and owes it all to the dwarf moneylender Quilp. When the debt is called the two slip out of the city on foot and drift through brickfields and factory towns with Quilp hunting them. Issued weekly in Master Humphrey's Clock, it was the most widely read thing Dickens published in his lifetime and remains the standing test case in arguments about Victorian sentiment.
