Black Beauty

Anna Sewell · 1877 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

A well-bred colt broken in gently on a country estate learns the bit, the bearing rein and the difference between a good master and a careless one, then changes hands as his owners' fortunes change. Job masters, a livery stable and the London cab ranks take him down through the trades, among horses worked past their strength. Sewell wrote it in her last illness to teach kindness to horses.
