Barrack-Room Ballads

Rudyard Kipling · 1892 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

Ballads spoken from the ranks in an accent English verse had not admitted before — Danny Deever walked to the gallows in front of the parade, Tommy Atkins turned away from the public house in peacetime, a regimental water-carrier under fire at Gunga Din, a discharged soldier remembering a girl on the road to Mandalay. The Empire's business is reported by the men who do it for a shilling a day and are told what to think about it afterwards. It sold on a scale no volume of English verse had reached since Tennyson, and set a register the next generation spent twenty years getting out of.
