Puck of Pook's Hill
Two children acting a scene from Shakespeare in a Sussex meadow on Midsummer Eve raise the oldest of the Old Things, who thereafter fetches them people out of the ground the field stands on. A Norman knight holding a manor for the people his side defeated, a centurion on a Wall the legions are preparing to abandon, and a Jewish moneylender present at the making of Magna Carta each take a turn. Kipling wrote it at Bateman's, the house he had just bought, and the history in it is the history of that one patch of Sussex.
