Just So Stories

Rudyard Kipling · 1902 CE · Short Story · English · Victorian

Twelve accounts of how things came to be as they are, told to a listener addressed throughout as Best Beloved: how the whale got his throat, the camel his hump, the leopard his spots, and what an elephant's child of insatiable curiosity went to the great grey-green greasy Limpopo to ask. The alphabet is invented in one and a cat declines domestication in another. Kipling made them up for his eldest daughter.
