Māui Fishes Up the Land

Polynesian myth · c. 1500 CE · Myth / Legend · Polynesian · Renaissance

The youngest brother stows away under the floor of the canoe, and once they are far out of sight of land he produces a hook cut from his grandmother's jawbone and baits it with blood from his own nose. What comes up on the line is not a fish but a country, and he tells his brothers to leave it whole until he has found a priest to make it safe. Recited from Hawaii to Aotearoa with the island named differently in each telling, which is how one hero explains a different homeland everywhere he is claimed.
