Māui Snares the Sun

Polynesian myth · c. 1500 CE · Myth / Legend · Polynesian · Renaissance

Maui, the youngest and least regarded of his brothers, complains that the sun crosses the sky too fast for anyone to finish a day's work or cook a meal. He plaits ropes from flax, takes his brothers to the pit where the sun rises, and lies in wait with a noose and a jawbone club. The Polynesian trickster-hero at his most characteristic: the world as given is negotiable.
