Inuit myth · c. 1700 CE · Myth / Legend · Inuit · Enlightenment

A hunter is driven out to sea in his kayak by a storm an old woman raises to avenge her grandson, and the coast he finally reaches is not the one he left. Season after season he meets a woman with a knife in her sleeve, a fox who takes off her skin to keep his house, a wolf-mother, a giant who boils meat in a stone pot; each time he stays a while, and each time he goes on. The great wandering cycle of the Inuit, told from Greenland to Alaska and still being performed when Boas and Rasmussen came to write it down.
