The Forest of a Thousand Daemons

D. O. Fagunwa · 1938 CE · Novel · Nigerian · Modernist

Akara-ogun, a hunter whose mother was a witch and whose father kept charms enough to outlast her, sits down with a scribe and dictates the account of three expeditions into Irunmale, the forest of a thousand daemons. He bargains with Agbako, who returns in a new shape each time he is killed, takes a wife among the ghommids, and is at last sent by his king with six companions to seek out the sage of Mount Langbodo. The first full-length novel written in Yoruba, taking its road from the oral hunters' tale and its allegorical frame from the Bunyan a mission-school teacher had taught, and the book every Nigerian novelist who came after had read first.
