The Adventures of Prince Achmed

Lotte Reiniger · 1926 CE · Film · German · Modernist

A sorcerer trades the Caliph a horse that flies in exchange for his daughter, and Prince Achmed, tricked into mounting it, is carried off toward the islands of Wak-Wak and the peri Pari Banu. Reiniger cut every figure from black cardboard and thin lead and animated them under glass over three years, drawing the frame story and Aladdin's from separate cycles of the Arabian Nights. The oldest surviving animated feature, and still the high point of silhouette animation.
