Plain Tales from the Hills
Forty short pieces of Anglo-Indian life, most of them first printed as column-fillers in the Civil and Military Gazette at whatever length the page had left. Subalterns, bored wives at Simla, district officers and the men under them move through flirtations, transfers, disgraces and fevers, watched by a narrator who knows everyone's business and rations what he will say. Kipling was twenty-two, and the collection made his name in London before he had been there.
