The Tales of Belkin
Five pieces offered as the papers of a dead provincial landowner, among them a duel broken off for six years, a girl who elopes into a snowstorm and marries the wrong man, and a postmaster whose daughter goes off with a passing hussar. The postmaster's walls carry German prints of the prodigal son, a sequence the tale sets up and then declines to follow. Pushkin's first completed prose, published under Belkin's name and not his own.
