What Every Woman Knows

J. M. Barrie · 1908 CE · Play · English · Modernist

A Scottish family of stonemasons catches a poor student breaking into their house to read their books, and offers him three hundred pounds for his education on condition that in five years he marry their plain sister if she will have him. He rises to Parliament on speeches everyone admires, and never asks where the wit in them comes from. Barrie's comedy of a marriage bargain turns on what a wife may know and never say.
