The History Boys

Alan Bennett · 2004 CE · Play · English · Contemporary

Eight clever boys at a Sheffield grammar school in 1983 are drilled for Oxbridge entrance by a teacher who loves poetry for its own sake and a younger one hired to sharpen their performance. The conflict between knowledge and the packaging of it runs through the staffroom and the classroom. Premiered at the National Theatre in 2004 and the biggest hit of Bennett's career.
