The Tale of Tsar Saltan
A tsar listening at a window to three sisters at their spinning marries the one who promises him a son. He goes to war, her sisters and the cook swap the letters that travel between them, and mother and newborn are sealed into a tarred barrel and pushed out to sea. Pushkin put into verse a story his nurse Arina Rodionovna had told him, keeping the trochaic folk metre he used for all his verse tales.
