Wild Seed
Doro has lived four thousand years by stepping out of one body and into another, and has spent most of them breeding people with unusual minds into a stock he considers his property. In a village near the Niger in 1690 he finds a woman three centuries old who heals herself from the inside and can take the shape of any creature she has tasted, and she is the first thing he has wanted that he cannot simply kill. Their bargain carries them across the Atlantic and through two hundred years of American slavery.
