The Antelope Wife

Louise Erdrich · 1998 CE · Novel · Native American · Contemporary

A cavalry soldier rides down a burning Ojibwe village, carries off a dog with a baby lashed to its back, and the debt from that morning runs five generations forward into present-day Minneapolis. A trader abducts a woman who runs with antelope, twin sisters bead patterns that decide who lives, and a bakery, a marriage and a drinking problem carry on regardless. Erdrich's first novel outside the North Dakota cycle, working an urban Ojibwe world instead.
