Between the tuberculosis winter of 1912 and the timber sale of 1924, two narrators take turns explaining Fleur Pillager: Nanapush, the last man of his line, who talks in order to keep people alive, and Pauline, a mixed-blood girl who means to become a saint and will trade her own people for it. Fleur has drowned twice in Lake Matchimanito and the water spirit is said to want her back. Earliest chapter of the North Dakota cycle in story time and the third of it in print.
