The Flower Cross
Elena Kolyadina · 2009 CE · Novel · Russian · Contemporary
A girl in seventeenth-century Totma, a town in northern Russia, is accused of witchcraft by a community that reads its own misfortunes in her. The novel is told in a mock-archaic Russian that makes the period's belief feel present. It won the Russian Booker in 2010 in an award that drew public dispute.
