The War of the Worlds

H. G. Wells · 1898 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

A cylinder comes down on Horsell Common outside Woking, unscrews from the inside over two days, and the sightseers who have walked out to look at it are burned where they stand. As the fighting-machines start across Surrey a writer on scientific subjects, separated from his wife, works east through emptying towns toward a London that has begun to leave on foot. Wells staged the extermination in his own commuter belt and set the vanished Tasmanians on the first page as the precedent.
